Some handhelds — most famously Anbernic's RG-series — won't charge properly from a modern USB-C fast charger. Here's why that happens, how to tell if your device is affected, and the simplest fix.
Many budget handhelds use a simple 5-volt charging circuit that doesn't speak USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) — the fast-charging standard used by modern phone and laptop chargers. Plug one of these handhelds into a USB-C PD or GaN charger and it may charge extremely slowly, only while powered off, or not at all — sometimes showing a charging light while the battery never fills.
A USB-C PD charger only delivers a trickle of power until the device formally requests more over the PD protocol. These handhelds never make that request. Worse, on several models (notably the Anbernic RG35XX family) the USB-C port is missing the small CC pull-down resistors that tell a charger “I'm a device that needs power.” A high-quality E-marked USB-C-to-C cable can make it worse, because the charger reads the cable and decides nothing needs charging. The result: a perfectly good charger that refuses to feed the handheld.
This is normal behaviour for the hardware, not a fault — you usually just need the right charger. Hardware-savvy owners can also add the missing 5.1k Ω CC resistors, but that's an advanced mod and not necessary for most people.
