Compiled & reviewed by Urs von Gunten, HandheldWiki editorial · How we rate ·

This list is for buyers who want a capable retro handheld without spending more than $300, whether they are just starting out or looking to step up from a basic device. All 40 picks are evaluated on build quality, emulation performance, and value at their asking price. The range spans entry-level devices like the $70 Miyoo Mini Plus, which handles systems up through Nintendo DS, and the $64–$68 Anbernic RG-35XX series, which reaches Dreamcast, all the way to mid-range options like the $199–$225 Retroid Pocket 5, capable of emulating PlayStation 2. The HandheldWiki Take

The Chipset Bottleneck

At $300 you reach the top of Android-handheld performance: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the AYN Odin 2 ($299). This is the chip that finally makes PS2, Wii and even some Switch and Wii U titles realistic on an ARM device — a tier above the Snapdragon 865 / Retroid Pocket 5 class. The cheaper devices on this list are here for budget completeness; the Odin 2 is the reason to shop at this price.

Display Realities

Large, high-refresh AMOLED and IPS panels are standard now. They handle both pixel-art (with integer scaling) and 3D content well — the display is no longer a compromise at any point.

Firmware & Software Reality

Pure Android flagship territory. Expect to hand-tune standalone emulators for the demanding systems (AetherSX2/NetherSX2 for PS2, Dolphin for GameCube/Wii) — the power is there, but PS2 and up still reward a careful setup rather than running flawlessly out of the box.

Ergonomics & Build

The Odin 2 sets the bar: excellent Hall-effect sticks, a huge battery, and a premium shell. This is a device you can comfortably play AAA cloud and native Android games on, not just emulators.

The Verdict — Price-to-Performance

The AYN Odin 2 ($299) is the definitive sub-$300 handheld and the strongest non-x86 device you can buy. If your target tops out at GameCube/Wii, the Retroid Pocket 5 ($199) saves you $100 and still delivers — but the Odin 2 is the one that does almost everything.
