Best Retro Handhelds Under $50

Compiled & reviewed by Urs von Gunten, HandheldWiki editorial · How we rate ·

This list is for buyers who want a functional retro handheld without spending more than $50, whether they're new to the hobby or looking for a low-risk second device. All 40 picks sit in the entry power tier, meaning expectations should be set accordingly — these machines handle older libraries well but won't push demanding 3D hardware. Emulation ceilings vary by device: the Anbernic RG35XX Pro and RG28XX both reach Dreamcast, while the $40 R36S tops out at Nintendo DS and the PowKiddy V90 handles up to Game Boy Advance. If you're after Game Boy, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, or PlayStation 1 coverage on a tight budget, every device here is worth considering.

The HandheldWiki Take

The Chipset Bottleneck

This is the floor of the hobby, and the chip is the whole story. The Allwinner H700 (RG-35XX, RG-28XX, RG35XX Pro) and the older RockChip RK3326 (R36S) comfortably max out 8- and 16-bit systems plus PlayStation 1, and the H700 reaches some Dreamcast. Avoid the ancient Allwinner F1C100S in the PowKiddy V90 — at 32 MB of RAM it is a Game Boy/NES toy, not a PS1 machine. Ignore RAM-size marketing here; 1 GB is plenty at this tier and you will never be RAM-limited before you are CPU-limited.

Display Realities

A sharp 3.5" 640×480 4:3 IPS panel beats anything wider for retro libraries that were never designed for widescreen. Watch for sub-$45 units with washed-out TN-grade panels and poor viewing angles — the single most common regret at this price.

Firmware & Software Reality

Stock firmware down here is functional but plain. The hobby runs custom firmware (CFW) — muOS and Knulli are the favourites — which transforms the experience but costs you an evening with an SD card. If you want plug-and-play, the Miyoo line's OnionOS is the friendliest out of the box.

Ergonomics & Build

Vertical "Game Boy" shapes pocket beautifully but cramp adult hands on landscape games. None of these have sticks worth trusting — treat them as D-pad-first 16-bit machines.

The Verdict — Price-to-Performance

The R36S ($40) is the value champion if you can live with stock-firmware quirks and a low-rent shell. But the RG35XX Pro ($50) is the smarter buy: Anbernic build quality, the proven H700, and a thriving CFW community. Spend the few dollars saved on a fast SD card — it matters more than you think.
