PlayStation (PS1) — Specs, Architecture & Handheld Emulation

Compiled & reviewed by Urs von Gunten, HandheldWiki editorial · How we rate ·

The PlayStation (PS1) is a 5th generation home video game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Emulating it requires understanding its hardware architecture, display output (256×224 to 640×480), native 4:3 aspect ratio, and system-level performance bottlenecks.

Hardware Architecture & Emulation Bottlenecks

A triumph of 1994 hardware engineering. The Geometry Transformation Engine (GTE) performed matrix transforms in hardware while the GPU rendered flat and Gouraud-shaded polygons. Because the original GPU lacked a hardware sub-pixel Z-buffer, polygons famously warped and jittered in perspective. DuckStation revolutionized PS1 emulation by implementing PGXP (Parallel Geometry Extension), eliminating polygon wobbling entirely in real time.

The Technical Hurdle: Early 3D architecture with CD audio. Runs at full speed on virtually any handheld priced $40 and up.

Display & Scaling: Native 4:3. PGXP perspective correction and 2x to 5x upscaling make 1995 polygon graphics look pristine.

Emulation Benchmark Titles

Steam Deck OLED benchmark testing
Steam Deck OLED — Stress-tested across baseline and demanding PS1 titles.

Different games place drastically different demands on mobile hardware. We separate testing into entry-level baseline titles and stress-test benchmark titles:

🟢 Baseline / Entry Titles

Games that run smoothly on more modest chipsets:

  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Tekken 3
  • Spyro the Dragon

Demanding titles that separate entry chips from top-tier silicon:

  • Gran Turismo 2
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
  • Vagrant Story
  • Bloody Roar II
