DuckStation — Emulation Architecture, Settings & Handheld Guide

Compiled & reviewed by Urs von Gunten, HandheldWiki editorial · How we rate ·

DuckStation is an open-source standalone & libretro core emulator developed by stenzek. It is primarily designed to emulate PlayStation (PS1) on Android, Windows, Linux, macOS.

Architecture & Technical Design

Steam Deck — Benchmark handheld tested for high-efficiency DuckStation execution.

Created in 2019 by developer stenzek (a former Dolphin and PCSX2 core engineer), DuckStation took the emulation community by storm by leapfrogging decades-old PS1 emulators like ePSXe and PCSX ReARMed. Written in modern C++ with an emphasis on code cleanliness, DuckStation includes cycle-accurate CPU timing, CD-ROM seek time simulation, and an advanced implementation of PGXP (Parallel/Precision Geometry Transform Engine). PGXP intercepts vertex calculations within the PS1 GTE (Geometry Transformation Engine) and recalculates them with 32-bit floating-point precision, curing the polygon jitter and texture warping inherent to original 1994 fixed-point PlayStation hardware.

Key settings for balancing framerate, visual fidelity, and battery efficiency on mobile processors:

SettingRecommended ValueTechnical Impact & Advice
PGXP Geometry CorrectionEnabled (Precision: High)Eliminates classic PS1 3D polygon jittering, model warping, and texture swimming in real time.
Internal Resolution Scale2x (480p) to 5x (1080p)Transforms 1995 240p graphics into razor-sharp modern high-definition visuals.
True Color RenderingEnabled (24-bit)Removes native PS1 16-bit color banding, posterization, and dithering artifacts.

Capable Handheld Hardware

Based on our database benchmarks across 575 handhelds, 383 devices have the CPU IPC, GPU fillrate, and memory bandwidth to run systems emulated by DuckStation at Grade A (full speed) or Grade B (great):
