melonDS — Emulation Architecture, Settings & Handheld Guide
melonDS is an open-source standalone & libretro core emulator developed by Arisotura & melonDS Team. It is primarily designed to emulate Nintendo DS on Android, Windows, Linux, macOS.
Architecture & Technical Design

Created by Arisotura in 2016, melonDS was designed as an open, clean-room alternative to older closed-source DS emulators. Unlike emulators that rely heavily on high-level game-specific hacks, melonDS faithfully emulates the ARM946E-S and ARM7TDMI co-processors, 2D tile engines, and DSi internal memory hardware. Its hardware-accelerated OpenGL renderer allows upscaled 3D rendering up to 8x resolution, and its built-in Wi-Fi stack enables wireless multiplayer and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection recreation.
Target Consoles & System Profiles

melonDS is engineered to emulate the following video game hardware platforms:
| Console | Generation | Native Resolution | Original CPU Architecture | Tested Handhelds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo DS | 7th generation | Dual 3.0" TFT LCD screens (256 × 192 each, bottom screen resistive touch) | Best Handhelds → |
Recommended Settings & Handheld Optimization

Key settings for balancing framerate, visual fidelity, and battery efficiency on mobile processors:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Technical Impact & Advice |
|---|---|---|
| 3D Renderer | OpenGL | Allows upscaled 3D rendering up to 8x native resolution. |
| JIT Recompiler | Enabled | Crucial for full-speed execution on ARM and x86 handhelds. |
Capable Handheld Hardware
Based on our database benchmarks across 575 handhelds, 299 devices have the CPU IPC, GPU fillrate, and memory bandwidth to run systems emulated by melonDS at Grade A (full speed) or Grade B (great):
