Cemu — Emulation Architecture, Settings & Handheld Guide
Cemu is an open-source standalone emulator developed by Exzap & Team. It is primarily designed to emulate Wii U on Windows, Linux (Steam Deck), macOS.
Architecture & Technical Design

Created by Exzap in 2015, Cemu was initially a closed-source Windows emulator that gained worldwide acclaim for its rapid breakthroughs with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In 2022, Cemu transitioned to an open-source GPLv3 project and was ported natively to Linux and macOS. Its Vulkan renderer and community Graphic Packs allow players to run Wii U titles with unlocked framerates, widescreen modifications, and enhanced shadow resolution on handhelds like the Steam Deck.
Target Consoles & System Profiles

Cemu is engineered to emulate the following video game hardware platforms:

Recommended Settings & Handheld Optimization

Key settings for balancing framerate, visual fidelity, and battery efficiency on mobile processors:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Technical Impact & Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics API | Vulkan with Async Shader Compilation | Ensures fluid frametimes on handheld APUs like the Steam Deck and Z1 Extreme. |
| Graphic Packs | Resolution Bumps & FPS++ Mod | Enables uncapped framerates and widescreen geometry patches. |
Capable Handheld Hardware
Based on our database benchmarks across 575 handhelds, 76 devices have the CPU IPC, GPU fillrate, and memory bandwidth to run systems emulated by Cemu at Grade A (full speed) or Grade B (great):
