Compiled & reviewed by Urs von Gunten, HandheldWiki editorial · How we rate ·

PPSSPP is an open-source standalone & libretro core emulator developed by Henrik Rydgård & Team. It is primarily designed to emulate PlayStation Portable (PSP) on Android, Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS.

Architecture & Technical Design

PPSSPP (PlayStation Portable Simulator Suitable for Playing Portably) was created in 2012 by Henrik Rydgård, one of the original co-founders of Dolphin. From day one, PPSSPP was engineered from the ground up for mobile and cross-platform devices. It features blazing-fast JIT dynamic recompilers for x86, ARM, ARM64, and MIPS architectures. Its high-level emulation (HLE) of the PSP operating system and kernel allows games to boot instantaneously without requiring external BIOS files. PPSSPP's Vulkan rendering backend is renowned for its lightweight CPU overhead and low battery draw on portable gaming handhelds.
