Beetle Saturn — Emulation Architecture, Settings & Handheld Guide
Beetle Saturn is an open-source libretro core emulator developed by Mednafen Team / Libretro. It is primarily designed to emulate Sega Saturn on All Platforms.
Architecture & Technical Design

Sega's Saturn is legendary for its notoriously labyrinthine dual-CPU architecture, featuring two Hitachi SH-2 processors, dual video display processors (VDP1 and VDP2), a custom SCU DSP, and a Motorola 68EC000 sound CPU. Beetle Saturn (the Libretro port of Mednafen Saturn) prioritizes cycle-exact timing over speed hacks. It meticulously replicates VDP1 distorted sprite quadrilaterals and VDP2 background planes. Due to its uncompromising accuracy, Beetle Saturn requires a robust mid-range or flagship handheld CPU to maintain full 60 FPS output.
Target Consoles & System Profiles

Beetle Saturn is engineered to emulate the following video game hardware platforms:
| Console | Generation | Native Resolution | Original CPU Architecture | Tested Handhelds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sega Saturn | 5th generation | — | Best Handhelds → |
Recommended Settings & Handheld Optimization

Key settings for balancing framerate, visual fidelity, and battery efficiency on mobile processors:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Technical Impact & Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal Overscan | Disabled / Cropped | Removes native Saturn black border pillarboxing on modern displays. |
| Cartridge Type | Auto Detect (4M Extended RAM) | Automatically loads the 4MB RAM expansion cartridge for Capcom 2D fighters. |
