RetroArch — Emulation Architecture, Settings & Handheld Guide
RetroArch is an open-source universal frontend / core framework emulator developed by Libretro Team. It is primarily designed to emulate Game Boy & Game Boy Color, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES / Famicom), Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, Game Boy Advance, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), PlayStation (PS1), Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn on All Platforms.
Architecture & Technical Design

Conceived in 2010 by Twinaphex (Daniel De Matteis), RetroArch decoupled game emulator logic from platform-specific audio and video drivers by creating the Libretro API specification. Under this architecture, emulator engines are compiled as modular dynamic libraries ('cores') that interface with RetroArch's unified frontend. RetroArch powers the vast majority of custom handheld firmwares (OnionOS, ArkOS, AmberELEC, JELOS, ROCKNIX) and pioneered groundbreaking latency-reduction features like Run-Ahead frame execution.
Target Consoles & System Profiles

RetroArch is engineered to emulate the following video game hardware platforms:
| Console | Generation | Native Resolution | Original CPU Architecture | Tested Handhelds | Wiki Guide → | Wiki Guide → | Wiki Guide → |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game Boy Advance | 6th generation | 2.9" reflective TFT LCD (240 × 160 resolution, unlit original) | Best Handhelds → | Wiki Guide → |
| PlayStation (PS1) | 5th generation | 256×224 to 640×480 | Best Handhelds → | |
| Nintendo 64 | 5th generation | 240p, 480i | Best Handhelds → | |

Recommended Settings & Handheld Optimization

Key settings for balancing framerate, visual fidelity, and battery efficiency on mobile processors:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Technical Impact & Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Run-Ahead Latency Reduction | 1–2 Frames | Dramatically reduces input lag, often beating original CRT hardware response times. |
| CRT Shader Preset | crt-geom or crt-easymode | Recreates authentic phosphor masks and scanlines for retro games. |
| RetroAchievements | Enabled | Unlocks community achievements for thousands of classic console games in real time. |
Capable Handheld Hardware
Based on our database benchmarks across 575 handhelds, 449 devices have the CPU IPC, GPU fillrate, and memory bandwidth to run systems emulated by RetroArch at Grade A (full speed) or Grade B (great):
