JELOS (Just Enough Linux Operating System) was one of the most influential open-source operating systems in the history of handheld retro gaming. Active from 2021 to early 2024, JELOS set the standard for modern handheld Linux distributions, replacing fragmented vendor firmware with a unified, professionally maintained OS.
JELOS pioneered automatic panel detection, out-of-the-box PortMaster integration, and automated Wi-Fi updates across hundreds of device revisions. While official JELOS development concluded in March 2024, its entire codebase and community mission live on directly through its official fork, ROCKNIX.

Architecture & System Design
Built using the Buildroot framework, JELOS packaged an immutable kernel and root filesystem. It decoupled user storage onto standard FAT32/exFAT partitions, protecting devices from boot failure during battery exhaustion.
Installation & Storage Setup
Users of legacy JELOS builds are officially recommended to migrate to ROCKNIX by placing the ROCKNIX update `tar` file directly into the `.update` directory.
