ArkOS — Features, Setup & Handheld Compatibility
ArkOS (Another RK3326 / RK3566 OS) is widely regarded as the most flexible, feature-dense Linux operating system available for Rockchip-powered retro handhelds. Created and maintained by Christian Haitian, ArkOS debuted during the ODROID-Go Advance era and quickly became the enthusiast distribution of choice for the Anbernic RG351 series, RG353 series, Powkiddy RGB30, and popular budget portables like the R36S.
Unlike minimalist distributions that strip out userspace utilities, ArkOS is built on a full 64-bit Ubuntu LTS core. This architectural choice gives users full terminal access, SSH and Samba network sharing, and access to modern compiler toolchains.
ArkOS was also instrumental in popularizing PortMaster—the open-source initiative that allows native Linux ports of commercial PC indie games to run directly on ARM handhelds.

Architecture & System Design
ArkOS utilizes a 64-bit Linux kernel with 32-bit userland compatibility libraries, allowing it to seamlessly run both 64-bit modern RetroArch cores and legacy closed-source 32-bit emulators (such as DraStic for Nintendo DS).
Hardware graphics acceleration is delivered via the Mesa Panfrost driver stack on RK3566 and RK3326 SoCs. Display timings and aspect ratio scalers are handled through custom kernel device tree overlays (DTB), enabling sharp 1:1 pixel mapping on unique panels like the Powkiddy RGB30's 720x720 display.
Installation & Storage Setup
ArkOS is flashed directly to micro-SD storage using BalenaEtcher or Rufus. On first boot, the system automatically expands the root filesystem to fill available storage.
Network-enabled handhelds can run updates directly from `Options › Update`, pulling upstream kernel tweaks, new emulator cores, and PortMaster runtime libraries without wiping user data.
