ROCKNIX is the direct community successor to JELOS (Just Enough Linux OS), established in early 2024 after the JELOS development team stepped down. Maintaining the same commitment to open-source collaboration, ROCKNIX supports an enormous variety of retro handhelds, from budget Rockchip RK3566 devices (Powkiddy RGB30, x55, Anbernic RG353) to flagship RK3588 portables and x86 handheld PCs.
ROCKNIX is distinguished by its technical rigor, pushing for mainline Linux kernel support, modern Wayland display compositors, and open-source Mesa drivers over legacy vendor binary blobs.
It features a polished EmulationStation frontend, native PortMaster support, and integrated network services.

Architecture & System Design
The operating system is packaged as an immutable read-only squashfs system image with a persistent user data overlay. By migrating graphics stacks to Wayland and Panfrost, ROCKNIX eliminates legacy X11 overhead, providing tear-free display presentation and optimal frame pacing.
On the Powkiddy RGB30, ROCKNIX provides custom display drivers that take full advantage of the 720x720 1:1 screen, offering integer 8:7 scaling for SNES and pixel-perfect square aspect ratios for Game Boy and PICO-8.
Installation & Storage Setup
ROCKNIX supports multi-card setups out of the box. Users can configure wireless networking directly within the EmulationStation UI to receive OTA updates and scrape game metadata from ScreenScraper.
